Whenever winter and fall comes around, temperature drops and humidity also reduces  naturally due to cool air not being able to carry as much moisture as warm air. When faced with lower humidity and dry air, some of us may start to develop dry eyes and skin which can get somewhat uncomfortable. Other undesired effects of lowered humidity also include increased bacteria and virus growth. This leads to many homeowners looking for space heaters that doesn’t dry the air.

In these cases, both heating and humidification are required to ensure that your home remains comfortable and free of disease. Traditionally, you will need to get two separate appliances (humidifier and heater) but now there are heater-humidifier combos that will do the job just fine.

Dr Infrared Portable Space Heater with Humidifier DR968H

The Dr Infrared Portable Space Heater with Humidifier 968H measures 13 x 11 x 16″ and weighs 24 lbs. It features a dual heating system of infrared radiation and convection, making it a natural choice for heating in large rooms. With tip-over and overheat protection, this heater also delivers on the safety aspect. It also has an in-built thermostat that allows for temperature ranging from 50 to 86 °F.

What we love about Dr Infrared is the awesome humidifier that comes inbuilt into the heater. This prevents our poor skin from drying out during the harsh and dry winter season. Their heat output is also top range and has been shown to be 60% more powerful than other similar models of similar wattage. Dr Infrared’s advanced heating system enables greater heat production without using any more power with a high-efficiency blower.

In terms of the humidification capabilities, the water source is in the form of a water bottle that can be attached to the rear side of the heater. The maximum capacity of the water bottle is 500ml and humidification can last about 8 hours. The manufacturers have recommended that users only use this 500ml bottle that is provided but we have tried using a larger 1 litre bottle and it worked out fine as well. It doubled the humidification duration we got but try this at your own risk!

For the dual functionality, the humidifier can be turned on and off at user discretion so it allows for energy savings when you don’t require the humidification. Also, the humidifier shuts off automatically when the water bottle is empty.

In terms of ease of adding water, the humidifier is attached to the rear of the heater and it might be a little difficult to reach for when you would like to change water. You would also need to remove the whole humidifier unit and unscrew the bottle to add water. I would say it does get a little fiddly for the water change. Also, distilled water is required for the humidification according to manufacturer’s recommendation.

Pros

  • Long duration of humidification up to 8 hrs
  • Humidifier can be turned off if not required
  • Contains in-built humidifier to prevent drying of skin during winter
  • Blower is whisper quiet at 39 decibels
  • Programmable timer with up to 12 hour duration
  • Great safety features with tip over and overheat protection
  • Fast at heating up
  • Can create up to 60% more heat than other models on the market

Cons

  • Front grate do get pretty hot to touch as the heated air circulates through there
  • Remote can only be used once you manually turn on the heater
  • Changing and adding water is quite troublesome due to position of the humidifier

What their fans love: This unit does a great job of heating AND humidifying, although you can run the heater alone if you wish. It warms up fast and holds the temperature you set. It looks nice in any room, too.”

Best Space Heater-Humidifier Combo Buyers’ Guide

What is a heater-humidifier combo?

Space heaters are devices that can be used as a supplemental source of heating during the colder seasons in addition to your central heating. Sometimes it may also be used as the main source of heating when you are just trying to heat up the room.

A humidifier is a device that increases the relative humidity in the room by releasing moisture into the air.

When calibrated to the correct level, both temperature and humidity levels will play a huge role in providing comfort to your home. In a stroke of genius, manufacturers decided to combine the heater and humidifier together to give us the heater-humidifier combo. These units come with both heating and humidification capability in one single device. They usually have the ability to work separate from each other, giving you the flexibility you need.

Why Do You Need A Heater-Humidifier Combo Unit

Convenience

Traditionally, homeowners had to buy their heaters and humidifiers separately from each other when they needed both the warmth and the humidity especially during the winter seasons. This often results in two clunky units that take up valuable space in the house. In a smaller home or an RV, real estate space is so limited that this is just not feasible. Therefore, homeowners would usually just choose one over the other and the heater usually wins.

After the cold season ends, the problem becomes storage space and homeowners frequently have to go to great lengths to make space for these two devices.

By combining them into one single unit, homeowners are now able to enjoy the benefits from both devices without the hassle of space allocation and storage.

Maintenance Of Ideal Home Humidity

A good humidity level is one in which we can get the most amount of comfort and where it is most conducive to our health. There is a wide range of ideal indoor humidity reported by studies and online sources but most seems to agree that a comfortable humidity level is between 30% to 70%.

In winter, the humidity level tends to drop below 30% and this results in poor comfort, direct health effects such as dry eyes and dry skin, indirect health effects such as increased virus survivability and increased bacteria growth.

Having a heater-humidifier combo would help to keep the home humidity level at an acceptable range and keep the above mentioned effects in check

Prevent Health Effects From Low Humidity

In areas with very low indoor humidity (dry air), we tend to suffer from irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and skin. This is due to the drying of the surface membrane that covers these areas. Some common symptoms that may arise are nose bleeding and eczema. By having a heater-humidifier combo, we can keep these membrane moist and hence less likely to get irritated.

For our seniors and elders, low humidity may result in even more severe health effects such as asthma and respiratory difficulties. Therefore, heater-humidifier combo units should definitely be a top consideration when choosing a space heater for our seniors. You can read our guide on how to choose the best safe space heater for seniors over here.

Reduce Growth Of Bacteria And Viruses

Most bacteria prefer humid environments but there are some bacteria which thrive under dry conditions. One such bacteria is Mycoplasma pneumoniae. It is an airborne bacteria that can cause pneumonia or other severe respiratory disease. Tests on it shows that it can survive longer when exposed to low relative humidity levels.

For viruses, the current research shows that their infectivity and survival are the greatest when humidity level is at 20% and it is the lowest when the humidity is between 40% to 70%.

Having a heater-humidifier combo would hence reduce the transmission of disease from bacteria and viruses. For people suffering from asthma and other respiratory diseases, a heater-humidifier combo would really aid them during the winter months.

You Love Doing Hot Yoga

Hot yoga is a type of yoga that is performed under hot and humid conditions resulting in significant sweating after the workout. Although frequently done in the gym, it can be done at the comfort of your own home as well. In order to replicate the heat and humidity conditions, a heater-humidifier combo would be the most ideal as it can supply both heat and humidity in a single unit.

What To Look Out For In A Heater-Humidifier Combo Unit

Duration Of Humidification

Heater humidifiers have a water source from which it generates the moisture to humidify the air. This water source may be in the form of a water tank or a water bottle. Once the water level drops below a certain level, the humidifier will switch off automatically to conserve energy. Therefore, it is important to have a good size on the water tank or bottle to reduce the number of times you need to refill the water. This is especially relevant if you intend to use it overnight. Depending on how the water is used, different heaters would have different rate of water consumption and hence different duration of humidification.

Ease Of Adding Water

Replenishing water to the water source is required for any sort of heater humidifier combo. Therefore, it is important to find a heater humidifier where changing the water is easy and convenient. In order to find one that is easy and convenient, look for a heater where the water tank or bottle is easily accessible.

Ease Of Cleaning

Heater humidifiers have water tanks for producing the steam. Build up of salt and mineral contents in the tank can severely affect the performance of your appliance. Furthermore, the moist and warm conditions are very favorable for mold and fungi growth. Therefore, regular and thorough cleaning is essential to prevent the Regular cleaning is essential for preventing the growth of mold and mildew and limescale buildup. Having a heater humidifier that is easy to clean will save you tons of energy and time.

Separate Operating Function

Having the flexibility to run either the heater or humidifier on its own is essential in terms of energy and costs savings. In some situations, you only need one of the two function and this feature would make sure you don’t waste energy heating up a hot room or humidifying a moist room.

Best Space Heater Humidifier Combo Product review

Dr Infrared Portable Space Heater Elite DR998

The Dr Infrared Portable Space Heater Elite DR988 measures 16 x 11 x 16″ and weighs 26 lbs. Like its predecessor the DR968H (featured above), the Elite DR998 also features a dual heating system of infrared radiation and convection, making it a natural choice for heating in large rooms. In addition to the functions already present in DR 968H, this heater added on two new awesome applications; air purifier and oscillation fan. It is now 4 different appliances all rolled into one: heater, humidifier, air purifier and oscillation fan. The new oscillation mode enables this heater to now distribute heat throughout the entire area evenly and faster.

In terms of the humidification capabilities, it uses a built-in silent ultrasonic humidifier that can add much needed moisture into the winter air. The water source is in the form of a water bottle that can be attached to the rear side of the heater. The maximum capacity of the water bottle is 500ml and humidification can last about 8 hours.

For the functionality, the humidifier can be turned on and off at user discretion so it allows for energy savings when you don’t require the humidification. Also, the humidifier shuts off automatically when the water bottle is empty. In addition to that, the air purifier and oscillation fan can also be used separately on their own.

In terms of ease of adding water, the humidifier is attached to the rear of the heater and it might be a little difficult to reach for when you would like to change water. You would also need to remove the whole humidifier unit and unscrew the bottle to add water. I would say it does get a little fiddly for the water change.

Pros

  • Has air purification capabilities
  • Has an oscillation mode

Wiland Space Heater Ceramic Space Heater With Humidifier

The Wiland ceramic space heater with humidifier measures 17.2 x 9.4 x 8.8” and weighs 8.2 lbs. It comes with two heating modes: 750 watt which will get you to about 86-104℉ and 1500 watt which can then be cranked up to 104-122℉. Using ceramic heating and a fan to speed up the convection, this heater is able to heat up a large room fairly decently and rapidly. It also comes with oscillation that allows it to turn 90 left and right to ensure even distribution of heat within the room.

Other features include a programmable timer from which you can set it to run from 1 -12 hours, overheat protection, tip over protection and a fireproof exterior. Shaped like a tower heater with a sleek outline, this heater is also quite efficient in terms of space usage in the house.

In terms of the humidification capabilities, it comes with a water tank which can hold 1 litre of water and provides about 6 hours of humidification. Unlike the Dr Infrared heater, there is no way to increase the amount of water as the water tank is built into the heater with a fixed space. 6 hours of humidification may be slightly insufficient in terms of overnight use so be sure to top it up right before you go to bed.

Changing and adding water is a breeze for this heater as you just slide the water tank out from the base of the heater and slide it back in after you have added the water. Washing is also quite straightforward due to the ease of removal of the water tank.

In terms of functionality, the humidifier may be used on its own or together with the heater. Something to note when using the humidification function is to ensure all of the louvers of the air outlets are placed to the highest point.

When the water tank is not loaded, this heater weighs about 8lbs and is considered quite light and compact. This makes it a great portable heater humidifier that can be moved between rooms as well.

Pros

  • Has an oscillation mode
  • Humidifier can be turned off if not required
  • Contains in-built humidifier to prevent drying of skin during winter
  • Fan is virtually silent
  • Programmable timer with up to 12 hour duration
  • Great safety features with tip over and overheat protection
  • Fast at heating up
  • Easy to add water

Cons

  • 6 hours of humidification at a time may be too short for overnight use
  • Does not come with remote control

What the fans love: “Finally found a heater that won’t dry the hell out of me. It heats the room very quickly and I can see the water vapor coming out of the vent with the hot air. The unit also have a timer function where you can set to let it run for an hour and go to bed without the need to turn it off manually.”

Frequently asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Can you use a humidifier and heater at the same time?

A: Yes. Many heaters use fan-forced convection as it’s main mode of heat delivery but this will dry out the air in the room. Using a humidifier at the same time as the heater will prevent this from happening. This is best for users who suffer from dry skin and dry eyes.

Q: Will Humidifier Make The Room Feel Warmer?

A: Yes. The more moisture in the air, the warmer it feels. When the air is saturated with moisture, there is less potential for evaporation from your skin. Evaporation removes heat from your body.

Q: Can I use tap water for my humidifier?

A: It is preferable to use distilled water or demineralized water. Tap water contains minerals which may form deposits in your humidifier. These deposits may be then released into the air as white dust particles.

Q: Is humidifier required in winter?

A: Humidity levels usually fall in winter and a humidifier is recommended if your home humidity levels fall below 30%. Humidity levels lower than 30% can increase virus and bacteria growth substantially.

Q: Can a humidifier cause mold in the house?

A: Just like how low humidity is bad, excessive humidity is also harmful. Levels above 60% may cause increased fungi and mold growth. The ideal home humidity level is between 40% to 60%.

Q: Do humidifiers help with pneumonia and asthma?

Yes. The symptoms of pneumonia and asthma may be aggravated by dry air as the nasal passages get irritated more easily if they are are not kept moist. Humidifying the air appropriately would help relieve these symptoms of pneumonia and asthma.

Wrapping it up

Of the 3 products we reviewed, the Dr Infrared DR968H Space Heater with humidifier was our favorite heater-humidifier combo. First and foremost, the heating capability is excellent, putting out 60% more heat than other heaters of the same wattage on the market. Secondly, we are quite impressed with the amount of humidity it can put out. Having 8 to 10 hours of humidification without adding water allows us to use it comfortably while we sleep. Adding water is a little troublesome but thankfully it does go quite long before it needs a refill.

The Elite DR998 is an upgrade to DR968H but since we were focusing on the humidification properties, these 2 heaters are essentially the same but DR998 is more expensive. Therefore, we would strongly recommend DR968H as the heater-humidifier combo for your house!
