For many of us pet owners, our pets are an integral part of our family. We treat them like our friends and sometimes like our children. Like us, pets also get sick and suffer from ailments common to humans such as asthma, dry skin or other respiratory issues. While most of these symptoms are due to underlying medical conditions, environmental factors also play a huge role.

Air quality is an important parameter that homeowners need to manage for optimum health and comfort. While the cleanliness of air gets all the attention, humidity is something that should not be taken lightly. Poor humidity control has many harmful health effects for us and our pets and having a humidifier can help with this problem significantly. While most humidifiers would work, some are better than others. We did the research to find the best humidifiers for pets and here are the results.

Below, you will find a list of 5 best humidifiers from reputable international brands, all geared towards pets, each with their pros and cons clearly stated.

HuPro Premium Ultrasonic Cool And Warm Humidifier

Best Overall Humidifier For Pets

Product Overview

  • Coverage area: up to 500 sq. ft./ 47 sq. m
  • Water tank capacity: 1 gallons /4 litre
  • Running time: 30 hours
  • Dimensions: 14” x 11.2” x 10.5”
  • Weight: 8.48 lb

The HuPro Premium Ultrasonic Cool and Warm Humidifier is a dual mist humidifier that can cover an area up to 500 sq. ft. with its 4 gallon water tank. This large capacity humidifier has a running time of 30 hours between refills allowing users to use it through the night without waking up to refill it. If it does run out of water during the night, the auto shutoff feature kicks in, ensuring the safety of the unit and the user. As an ultrasonic humidifier, this model is also very quiet, registering only about 30 dB on the highest speed setting. This makes it an ideal choice for babies, seniors and sensitive sleepers.

In terms of functionality, the dual mist feature allows users to choose between cool or warm mist. If you are using this for your pet then using the cool mist mode would be safer. The smart humidification system incorporates three types of humidity control, auto mode, constant humidity and 5 speed levels.

One particular feature that caught our attention was the triple purification unit that consisted of  a ceramic filter, UV light and air ionization. The ceramic filter contains active carbon and mineral pellets that will absorb impurities from the water as it passes through the filter resulting in cleaner and fresher air. The great thing about this filter is that it never needs replacement so you never have to worry about replacement schedules or fork out additional cash for replacement filters.  Another feature that aids the cleansing of air is the air ionization. It produces 300 million cleansing negative ions per minute to decontaminate the water of fungus, virus and fungi. Combine that with an UV light that prevents odor in the water and you have a winner!

For ease of use, I really love that it is a top refilling humidifier because that is just so convenient for homeowners to refill without much effort and without any mess. The water tank also has an extra-wide opening for easy filling and cleaning.

One gripe I have with this humidifier is that the mist shoots straight up and some droplets will just drop down and wet the surface the humidifier is sitting on. It would have been better if the mist can be directed away from the humidifier and further away. It still does a good job but users will need to make sure they protect the floor with a rug or a tray so that water does not collect. Besides wetting the floor, this also causes the humidistat to register a higher humidity than what the room really is.

Pros

  • Quiet
  • Auto shut off feature
  • Triple purification feature
  • Good coverage area
  • Easy to refill water and clean

Cons

  • Tends to wet the surface/floor that it sits on
  • Humidistat can be inaccurate because the mist is saturated near the unit

What the fans love: “Easy to clean due to the removable water bin. Virtually silent. No fans or other noise. Love the little warming tray to put some scented oil. Keeps the master bedroom humidity at 45% ( up from 33% naturally ) and has solved respiration problems due to dry air. Bought a second one for the office.”

Best Humidifier For Pets Buyers’ Guide

How Does Dry Air Affects Your Pets

We all know the effects of dry air on humans. It is known to cause dry skin, dry eyes, dry noses and all kinds of respiratory problems. However, is it the same for our canine and feline friends? The answer is yes! The same goes with our pets.

In some cases, the symptoms may even be WORSE for our pets. We humans have a nice long breathing passage so there is adequate space for our body to warm up and moisten any air we breathe in. However, if you consider our furry friends, their breathing passages are a fraction of ours and they just do not have the real estate to do the necessary for the cold and dry air we have in fall and winter.

This results in greater respiratory problems for our pets and may cause exacerbation of asthma in our pets. Overall, cold dry air affects pets as much as it affects humans and we should not discount them.

Can Humidifier Help Relieve Cat Asthma And Other Respiratory Disease

It is key to understand that dry skin, dry eyes, asthma, congested airways can be signs and symptoms of an underlying health condition such as virus infection, respiratory infection, allergies, malnutrition, tumours or other disease. If your pets have any of these signs, it’s always best to consult your vet first to treat any possible medical conditions.

Once that is all clear and you have pinpointed dry air as one of the reasons causing your pets discomfort then a humidifier would really shine. Delivering clean healthy moisture into the dry, cold winter air would significantly alleviate any respiratory issues or skin dryness. Your pets would definitely be able to breathe better and more comfortably once the humidity level gets optimized.

What Is The Best Humidity Level For Pets

The most ideal and most comfortable humidity level to aim for is between 40% to 60% relative humidity. Studies have shown that this is the most optimum range of humidity for health and comfort.

While it may seem logical that higher humidity will be better for dryness, anything beyond 60% can cause other problems like increased growth of mold, fungus and viruses. Therefore, try to keep the humidity levels regulated between 40% to 60%

During winter, where humidity drops to 20% and lower, a humidifier would be a lifesaver for your pets.

For more information on the best humidity levels to keep in your homes and the scary effects of humidity, hop on to our post over here!

Are Humidifier Safe For Cats And Dogs

In most cases, yes. In the case of pets, the main worry is our pets knocking over the humidifier. Therefore, homeowners should avoid steam humidifiers which use boiling water to release moisture. During operation, the water in the humidifier can get extremely hot and cause severe burn injuries when toppled over. It is almost impossible to keep anything out of reach from your wandering pets so save yourself the worry and just get a cool mist humidifier.

Another possible worry for pet owners is the generation of white dust from humidifiers. White dust may be generated when homeowners use hard tap water in their ultrasonic humidifiers. The white dust is due to the mineral content in the hard water and it may sometimes cause allergic reactions for your pets. To avoid this, homeowners can choose to use distilled water in their ultrasonic humidifier. Alternatively, an evaporative humidifier would not have this issue at all even if tap water is used.

What Type Of Humidifier Is Best For Pets

Humidifiers can be broadly categorized into 4 main types

  • Evaporative
  • Ultrasonics
  • Steam Vaporizer
  • Air washer

While each type of humidifier has its pros and cons, homeowners will be glad to know that there are no specific type of humidifiers that are just for pets. However, each type has their own unique selling points that may be applicable to other aspects of your life. Do read on to find out more. Considerations When Choosing Humidifier For Pets

Is Cool Mist Or Warm Mist Better For Pets

Cool mist is the clear winner here. The main reason for this is due to safety reasons. Warm mist is generated by boiling water and then released as water vapor. When our pets get curious or overzealous with this thing shooting out mist, their first instinct is to knock it over and you can imagine the potential disaster if the humidifier is filled with boiling water.

For households with pets and children, cool mist humidifiers are always safer. Homeowners can go for an ultrasonic unit that has the option of cool and warm mist for different occasions. Alternatively, they can opt for an evaporative humidifier which is always cool mist.

Essential Oil Compatibility

Some humidifiers charge you a premium for having an essential oil port to indulge in some aromatherapy. However, if you are a pet owner, I would advise you to skip this altogether. Many essential oils can be poisonous and toxic to your pets. While those advertised to be safe for pets only have a few weak studies to back them up. Generally, the evidence for essential oils and pets is poor. Therefore, always err on the side of caution and refrain from using essential oils in your humidifier when you have pets.

For cats, these essential oils are poisonous

  • Cinnamon oil
  • Citrus oil
  • Clove oil
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Oil of sweet birch
  • Pennyroyal oil
  • Peppermint oil
  • Pine oils
  • Tea tree oil

For dogs, these essential oils are toxic

  • Pennyroyal oil
  • Pine oils
  • Tea tree oil
  • Wintergreen

In the event of any doubt, you may visit American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals website for their list of toxic plants.

Air Purifier Feature

For pets with asthma or allergies, the ability to clean the air thoroughly is always a plus point. Air purifiers have been found to help in relieving asthma symptoms. They can do so by removing the allergens from the air. Such allergens include pollen, dust and smoke. By removing these potential allergens there are less triggers for our pets who may be suffering from asthma.

While having a separate air purifier would work, why not get a unit which has both humidification and air purification features? Air washers are combination units that can do both well and can be a great choice for pets with asthma or allergies.

Ease Of Maintenance

This refers to the ease of refilling water and the ease of cleaning. Most humidifiers will require a refill of water every 24 hour depending on the capacity of the water tank. For something that you have to do frequently, it makes sense to find a model that allows easy refilling that is fast, efficient and neat. Usually, a top refill model is easier to do refilling as you just need to cover the top lid and pour in water. Generally, bottom refills tend to be messier and more of a hassle.

Humidifiers usually need a good thorough wash once every week. Depending on the model of the humidifier, the cleaning may take anything from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. When choosing a humidifier that is easy to clean, avoid units with many components or units with many small parts that are difficult to access. Some models come with specialized brush to allow users to reach difficult to access areas. The water tank should have a large access hole which allows the users to place the whole hand in for easy scrubbing.

If a humidifier cannot be cleaned properly, there will be buildup of lime, mold and fungus and these particles can get released into the air when the humidifier is working.

When choosing a humidifier to help our pets with their respiratory issues, definitely go for a unit that can be cleansed easily and thoroughly. This ensures that the water that is released is clean, fresh and healthy.

Running Time

Some of us find that when we wake up in the morning, our throat becomes dry and painful while our lips become cracked. This is usually because the air at night is cooler and drier. While I cannot be sure that our pets experience the same thing, I would guess that it should affect them as much as it affects us. For homeowners looking for a humidifier to use overnight during their sleep, the wise thing to do is to find a humidifier that can at least run continuously overnight without the need for a refill.

Homeowners can look at the running time of the humidifier when choosing their humidifier. At least 12 hours on their highest setting is recommended for overnight usage. Some units boast a long running time but only on the lowest setting. So… read the fine print!

Best Humidifier For Pets Product review

Boneco Airwasher W200 Humidifier & Purifier

Best Airwasher Humidifier For Pets

Product Overview

  • Coverage area: 200 sq. ft../ 18 sq. m
  • Water tank capacity: 1.2 gallons /4.5 litre
  • Essential Oil Compatibility: Yes
  • Refill: Top fill
  • Running time: 12 hours
  • Dimensions: 11” x 11” x 116”
  • Weight: 11.2 lb

The Boneco W200 Airwasher is a humidifier and air purifier combination unit that can cover an area up to 200 sq. ft. with its 1.2 gallon water tank. This medium room  humidifier has a running time of about 12 hours between refills. When it does run out of water or is low on energy, there is an automatic shutoff feature to prevent overheating. While not totally quiet during operation, the noise is still reasonable at about 40dB.

As an airwasher, it utilizes evaporative technology for its humidification and hence it will never run the risk of over-humidifying the room. Also, it does not have the typical white dust that ultrasonic humidifiers sometimes emit when tap water is used. This is important for pets whose respiratory problems may be triggered by white dust. For the owners, this saves them the hassle of using distilled water in the humidifier.

In terms of functionality, this humidifier and air purifier combo unit has a no frills approach with an easy to use manual knob control that allows users to choose between 2 moisture output settings. It does require a bit of trial and error initially to find the correct level that suits your home. However, once you nail that down, it is pretty convenient. For homeowners who are not too particular and looking for units with minimum configuration, this is a suitable model.

As an airwasher, the air purification feature comes from the evaporative mat in the unit that acts as a filter. While most humidifier filters require replacement every 3 monthly or so. This filter only needs to be replaced every 3 years! This is much more convenient for the user and saves them so much trouble.

For ease of use, I really love that it is a top refilling humidifier because that is just so convenient for homeowners to refill without much effort and without any mess. For cleaning wise, the majority of the components are actually dishwasher safe. This reduces all the scrubbing that you need to do when maintaining this airwasher. Pop it in the dishwasher, sit back and relax.

The limitations of this humidifier include a relatively short running time of 12 hours and this is on low setting. When used on the high setting, this humidifier may not be able to last you through the night if you do not refill it right before you retire to bed. Another issue that might be a stumbling block for some is the price. It is pricier than most other humidifiers due to the air purification feature. However, the quality does justify the price so if your budget allows, this is a great great buy you would not regret.

Pros

  • Reasonably quiet
  • Auto shut off feature
  • Air purifier feature
  • Easy to refill water and clean
  • Filter replacement every 3 years

Cons

  • Short running time
  • High price point

What the fans love: “I love it. Super easy to use, however due to its small size know that the water needs to be refilled every 8-10hours. I live in a 760sq ft apartment and it is able to keep my humidity around 45% if I stay on top of filling it and depending how cold it is outside and dry. Before I got this my apartment humidity level was at 20-24% this winter and I was feeling sick. This humidifier has really helped with my allergy symptoms.”

Pure Enrichment MistAire Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier

Best Portable Humidifier For Pets

Product Overview

  • Coverage area: 250 sq. ft. / 25 sq. m.
  • Water tank capacity: 0.3 gallons / 1.5 litre
  • Refilling: Bottom fill
  • Running time: 16 hours
  • Dimensions: 8” x 6” x 9”
  • Weight: 2.3 lbs

The Pure Enrichment MistAire humidifier is an ultrasonic humidifier which puts out cool mist as its mode of humidification. It comes with a 0.3 gallon water tank that can run for 16 hours between refills. With a coverage area of about 250 sq. ft., it is a comfortable fit for a small sized room.

With two different settings of mist speed, users will have some degree of control over the amount of humidification needed. There is no inbuilt humidistat for complete customization so you will need a separate humidistat if you desire a tight control of humidity level at home. There is a 360 degree rotatable nozzle that allows you to direct the mist towards the areas you want and away from areas which do not need so much moisture.

Quietness is also one of the features of this humidifier. It is whisper quiet and will not disturb the peace and quiet as you turn this on before you go to bed. Other features include waterless auto shut off and it comes with a cleaning brush to with the small spaces while maintaining your humidifier.

Perhaps the most defining point of this humidifier is how light and portable it is while still maintaining a decent amount of humidification. Weighing just slightly 2 pounds, you can bring this humidifier anyway your pet goes. However, this does also mean that it easier to topple this over when your pets get too close!

Do note that this is a bottom fill humidifier so you will need to remove the whole tank while refilling. Generally, a bottom fill humidifier is less convenient than a top fill humidifier and requires a bit more work.

Pros

  • Light and portable
  • Easy to clean
  • Decent humidification for a small humidifier
  • Quiet

Cons

  • Bottom fill is more troublesome to refill
  • Distilled or filtered water preferred

What their fans love: “Love the small humidifier I purchased — I use it in a bedroom and it makes a tremendous difference! So quiet you don’t know it’s on and provides just the right amount of moisture to keep me breathing easy all through cold weather months.“

Everlasting Comfort Ultrasonic Humidifier

Best Cool Mist Humidifier For Pets

Product Overview

  • Coverage area: up to 500 sq. ft./ 47 sq. m
  • Water tank capacity: 1.6 gallons /6 litre
  • Mist output: 270ml/hour
  • Running time: 50 hours
  • Dimensions: 11” x 7” x 14”
  • Weight:4.25 lb

The Everlasting Comfort Ultrasonic humidifier is a cool mist humidifier that can cover rooms up to 500 sq. ft with its 6 gallons water tank. With a mist output rate of about 270ml/hr, this humidifier can last for 50 hours on the low setting. This makes it ideal for a large bedroom where you can leave the humidifier running through the night. As an ultrasonic humidifier, you can expect it to be quiet and it delivers on that. This humidifier is virtually silent during operation and is perfect for bedrooms or baby’s room.

In  terms of functionality, the auto shut off feature enables the humidifier to turn itself on automatically when it runs out of water. The humidistat is controlled by an adjustable knob which allows the user to choose any humidity between their minimum and maximum. However, there is no numerical indication of the humidity level so you require a separate humidistat to tell you exactly how humid/dry your home is.

Like most other ultrasonic humidifier models, this humidifier is also filterless so you dont require costly filter changes. However, this does mean that there will be white dust coming out from the humidifier. Therefore, if this is an issue for your pets, be sure to use distilled or filtered water.

In terms of ease of use, I will give it only a ⅗. The water tank is easy enough to wash but the refilling can get pretty messy and wet because it is a bottom refilling humidifier. Most homeowners have complained that refilling can be difficult due to the shape of the tank and also how heavy it can get when it’s full.

All in all, this is a no-nonsense humidifier that will get the job done with no frills. It has a good price point even for users on a tight budget.

Pros

  • Very quiet operation
  • Auto shut off
  • Essential oils tray
  • Good price point

Cons

  • Refilling water can be difficult and messy

What their fans love: “It’s a great humidifier that does everything it was intended to do. The tank is huge! It is a nice perk since refilling a smaller tank every hour can get quite annoying. Even on Max power, which is a strong mist, this humidifier still lasts for hours.“

Venta LW45 Airwasher

Best Large Room Airwasher For Pets

Product Overview

  • Coverage area: 860 sq. ft. / 80 sq. m.
  • Water tank capacity: 2.6 gallons / 9.8 litre
  • Essential Oils Compatibility: No
  • Refilling: Top fill
  • Running time: 24 hours
  • Dimensions: 11.8” x 13” x 17.7”
  • Weight: 13 lbs

The Venta Airwasher is both a filter-free evaporative humidifier and filter-free air purifier, all in one lightweight unit. Featuring a 2.6 gallon water tank, the Venta LW45 is able to humidify dry room air while simultaneously purifying it in space up to 860 sq. ft. Using their disc technology, the Venta Airwasher is able to remove airborne pollutants down to 0.3 microns in size. For pets with asthma and allergies, this is an indispensable feature as the unit can remove dust, pollen and pet dander efficiently from the air. This effectively reduces most types of asthma/allergy triggers in the common household.

Besides being an air purifier, we should not forget that the main function of the Venta Airwasher is a humidifier. Using evaporative technology, it is able to keep the room humidity between 30% to 50% without any risk of over-humidifying the room. By keeping the room air moist, homeowners and their pets would also find it more comfortable on their nasal passages and airway. While not completely customizable like a unit with an inbuilt humidistat, homeowners can still choose the level of humidity by choosing between 3 fan settings.

The Venta airwasher is also pretty user-friendly. It is a top fill humidifier that allows easy refilling of water into the water tank. While most humidifiers recommend the use of distilled water to prevent lime buildup or the discharge of white powder, Venta airwashers have no issues with using hard tap water. This is because they provide a conditioner to use every 7 days to prevent lime buildup. It also helps to keep the Airwasher clean and hygienic as well as improve the evaporation/humidification process by coating the Disc Stacks. Washing is also not difficult as you just need to rinse the parts under water to clean it up.

The one grip I have is the noisy fan at the highest fan setting. The noise level ranges from 24 dB to 45 dB. If used at the lowest setting, it is perfectly fine but when used at the highest fan setting, the noise level at 45 dB is the threshold at which it might disturb you and your family.

Another limitation is the higher price point of this unit compared to other humidifiers on this review. It might not be suitable for homeowners on a budget. However, if your budget allows, this is a fantastic combo unit that is well worth your buck. WIth good humidification and air purification feature, this unit is easy to use, easy to maintain and perfect for homeowners with pets that are suffering from respiratory ailments.

Pros

  • Purifies air down to 0.3 microns in size
  • Has conditioner that prevent lime buildup
  • Convenient. Able to use hard tap water
  • Easy to refill with top fill design
  • Easy to clean and maintain

Cons

  • High price point
  • Not compatible with essential oils
  • Noisy fan

What the fans love: “No allergies- minimizes booger’s! We bought several of these for our whole house for wildfire season and they work great. Now we live in southern AZ and humidity levels can be 3%… the venta keeps all of us moist and breathing clean air. Great product. Once I tripped on the cord and customer service helped me fix it fast. Literally the best air purifier and humidifier ever – no water spots and it doesn’t get that humid.“

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Where is the best place to put a humidifier?

A: Long story short.

  • Placement in the middle of the room leads to fast and even humidification
  • Keep humidifier 14 -17 feet (4-5m) away from walls and furniture
  • Place 3 feet (1 m) away from the bed

best place to put humidifier

Q: What is the ideal humidity level at home?

A: The ideal range you want to keep your home at is between 40% to 60% relative humidity. This is the best range of humidity to maintain comfort at home and also to reduce direct and indirect health effects. For more information on how poor humidity levels can affect your health, check out our post on the harmful effects of humidity!

You do not need to use the humidifier for your plants during the night as there is much lesser evaporation with the lower ambient temperature. Excessive moisture in the soil can also cause damage to the roots which is harmful to the plants.

Q: Should the humidifier run all night?

A: Yes it is perfectly fine to keep the humidifier running all night if you always find yourself waking up with dry mouth and dry nasal passages. However, homeowners should be mindful to keep the humidifier well maintained if they wish to run it all night.

  • Always ensure there is enough water in the unit for overnight usage. Running the unit without water may burn the circuit and damage the humidifier. Alternatively, get a model with automatic waterless shut off.
  • Clean the humidifier regularly and rid it of lime, mold and fungus. If not, these particles will be distributed into the air every night during your beauty sleep and harm your health
  • Use distilled or filtered water instead of hard tap water to reduce the amount of lime and scale buildup

Q: Do Humidifiers Bother Dogs?

The issue here is ultrasonic humidifiers and the potential high frequency noise they generate. Ultrasonic humidifiers generate water mist by high frequency nebulization of water and it is much quieter than evaporative models because there is no fan. The fear is that these high frequencies may cause harm to our dog’s ears. However, this is a myth.

A human ear can pick up frequency between 20 Hz to 20000 Hz and a dog ear can pick up 64 Hz to 44000 Hz. However, an ultrasonic humidifier operates between 80000 Hz t0 240000 Hz which is totally out of the range of humans and dogs hearing.
