Just bought a bottle of wine that you are not planning on drinking right away? Well, what can we do about it? You just need to follow a few simple guidelines to keep your wine safe until you are ready to drink them

Something that can be easily controlled by the homeowners is the environmental condition of the wine cellar. It needs to be cool and damp. We did the research and here are the results.

HuPro Premium Ultrasonic Cool And Warm Humidifier

Best Overall Humidifier For Wine Storage

Product Overview

  • Coverage area: up to 500 sq. ft./ 47 sq. m
  • Water tank capacity: 1 gallons /4 litre
  • Running time: 30 hours
  • Dimensions: 14” x 11.2” x 10.5”
  • Weight: 8.48 lb

The HuPro Premium Ultrasonic Cool and Warm Humidifier is a dual mist humidifier that can cover an area up to 500 sq. ft. with its 4 gallon water tank. This large capacity humidifier has a running time of 30 hours between refills allowing users to only refill it once a day. If it does run out of water, the auto shutoff feature kicks in, ensuring the safety of the unit, the user and the precious wine. As an ultrasonic humidifier, this model is also very quiet, registering only about 30 dB on the highest speed setting. This makes it an ideal choice for babies, seniors and sensitive sleepers if you intend to re-purpose it.

In terms of functionality, the dual mist feature allows users to choose between cool or warm mist so homeowners do have the flexibility to use warm mist for other purposes. The smart humidification system incorporates three types of humidity control, auto mode, constant humidity and 5 speed levels. Wine owners would be able to adjust the humidity of their cellar easily with these controls.

One particular feature that caught our attention was the triple purification unit that consisted of  a ceramic filter, UV light and air ionization. The ceramic filter contains active carbon and mineral pellets that will absorb impurities from the water as it passes through the filter resulting in cleaner and fresher air. The great thing about this filter is that it never needs replacement. Another feature that aids the cleansing of air is the air ionization. It produces 300 million cleansing negative ions per minute to decontaminate the water of fungus, virus and fungi. Combine that with an UV light that prevents odor in the water and you have a winner! For a dark and damp place like a wine cellar, where mold and fungi thrive, having this ability to purify the moisture is crucial.

For ease of use, I really love that it is a top refilling humidifier because that is just so convenient for homeowners to refill without much effort and without any mess. The water tank also has an extra-wide opening for easy filling and cleaning.

One gripe I have with this humidifier is that the mist shoots straight up and some droplets will just drop down and wet the surface the humidifier is sitting on. It would have been better if the mist can be directed away from the humidifier and further away. It still does a good job but users will need to make sure they protect the floor with a rug or a tray so that water does not collect. Besides wetting the floor, this also causes the humidistat to register a higher humidity than what the room really is.

Pros

  • Quiet
  • Auto shut off feature
  • Triple purification feature
  • Good coverage area
  • Easy to refill water and clean

Cons

  • Tends to wet the surface/floor that it sits on
  • Humidistat can be inaccurate because the mist is saturated near the unit

What the fans love: “Easy to clean due to the removable water bin. Virtually silent. No fans or other noise. Love the little warming tray to put some scented oil. Keeps the master bedroom humidity at 45% ( up from 33% naturally ) and has solved respiration problems due to dry air. Bought a second one for the office.”

Best Humidifier For Wine Storage Buyers’ Guide

Why Is Humidity Important In Wine Cellar

When it comes to maintaining the optimum wine storage condition in a wine cellar, most people would talk about the ideal temperature range for wine storage. And they are absolutely right, the cooling system of your wine cellar is a crucial asset you cannot overlook. However, many wine cellar enthusiasts will often neglect the importance of optimizing the humidity levels in the wine cellar. This is a fatal mistake in the construction of a wine cellar!

If you want your wine to age gracefully and elegantly, you need to create a COOL and DAMP environment for your wine bottle. Both conditions are mandatory. Our wine bottles are sealed with a cork and this cork is breathable.

Excessively low humidity causes the cork to dry out and this naturally results in a loss of liquid from the bottles and eventual degradation of the wine. In this manner, your wine will never be able to reach the peak taste no matter how long you store it. Low humidity also makes the cork crumbly and brittle. Trying to remove them in that state would cause the cork to disintegrate and crumble into your wine as well!

On the other hand, excessively high humidity can cause mold and mildew to grow on the cork and eventually destroy the wine.

What Is The Ideal Humidity For Wine Cellar

The ideal and optimum humidity for a wine cellar should be maintained between 55% to 75% relative humidity. When combined with the correct temperature range between 55 to 58 deg F, this cool and damp environment is the perfect environment for your wine bottle to mature and age at a graceful and elegant pace.

Considerations When Choosing Humidifier For Wine Cellar

Is Cool Mist Or Warm Mist Better For Wine Storage

Cool mist is the clear winner here. The main reason for this is due to the preferred temperature range of wine cellar. A cool environment is required for wine to mature well. Therefore you do not want warm mist to affect the temperature in your wine cellar. In his sense, steam humidifiers are definitely out of the equations. Wine enthusiasts may consider evaporative or ultrasonic humidifiers instead.

Running Time

During winter when the humidity will dip to levels below 20%, you will require your humidifier working almost full time to provide that much needed moisture to your wine bottle. As such you will want a humidifier that has a reasonably long running time in between refills.

Homeowners can look at the running time of the humidifier when choosing their humidifier. At least 24 hours on their highest setting is recommended so that you only need to refill once a day. Some units boast a long running time but only on the lowest setting. So… read the fine print!

Coverage Area

When choosing a humidifier for your wine cellar, it is crucial that you find out the size of your room as accurately as possible to avoid disappointment. The easiest way to find out the size of your room is to measure the length and breadth of your room and then multiply them together. To find out the size of the whole house, measure the area of each individual room and then add them together. For an odd-sized room, try to get an estimated measurement of the length and breadth before multiplying them.

Once you have an idea of the actual size of your room, you can look at the models of humidifiers that you are interested in. Almost all manufacturers will list down the coverage area of their humidifiers in the product overview. These give you a good indication of what size room the humidifier is best for.

When looking at these values provided by the manufacturers, I would probably round them down by about 20%. For example, the manufacturer may say that the humidifier can cover an area of 1000 sq. ft. but I would take away 20% from that and estimate the coverage area to be about 800 sq. ft. This is because these values were probably measured in an ideal environment where there are no leaks or drafts in the room. In real life, we may have leaky windows, wall cracks, door gaps that may contribute to the loss in humidity.

Inbuilt Humidistat

As mentioned earlier, the ideal humidity level for wine storage is between 55% to 75%. It would be extremely advantageous for the homeowner if they can get a humidifier with an inbuilt humidistat so that it can detect the ambient humidity and allow the homeowner to effect changes easily. Models with digital display and controls are the most user-friendly for this purpose

Comparatively, models with twist knobs without a numerical or specific humidity will be more difficult to control. For these models, you will also need to purchase a separate humidistat to find out the humidity of your wine cellar.

Waterless Automatic Shut-Off

Waterless automatic shut-off is quite important because most of us probably do not make a daily trip to our wine cellar. Sometimes, we may forget to refill the water and it may run out. Having a model with automatic shut-off when the water runs out is a great safety feature in all humidifiers. This function detects when the water tank is dry and shuts off the unit. This saves electricity and also prevents overheating on the humidifier.

TaoTronics TT-AH018 Warm And Cool Mist Humidifier

Best Ultrasonic Humidifier For Wine Cellar

Product Overview

  • Coverage area: 450 sq. ft. / 40 sq. m.
  • Water tank capacity: 1.45 gallons / 5.5 litre
  • Essential Oils Compatibility: No
  • Refilling: top fill
  • Running time:45  hours
  • Dimensions: 10.2” x 8.07” x 12.6”
  • Weight: 6.8 lbs

The TaoTronics TT-AH018 warm and cool mist humidifier is an ultrasonics humidifier that can produce both warm and cool water vapor to humidify the room. While not technically a steam vaporizer, it does contain a heating element to produce warm mist that can reach temperatures of 60°C / 140°F. As an ultrasonic humidifier, there is no fan required and hence this unit is pretty quiet. It registers about 35 dB while it is operating.

With a coverage of about 200 to 450 sq. ft., this humidifier is good for a medium sized wine cellar and can run up to 45 hours between refills. If you are lucky, you only need to refill it every 2 days. That makes it that much more convenient. For refilling, this is a top fill humidifier and refilling is easy and convenient. Just pull up the top lid and pour water in.

Other features include a touch screen LED display for style and easy handling. The settings may be adjusted to customize mist output, mist temperature and also the humidity level. As with any good humidifier, this model comes with an inbuilt humidistat that allows it to determine the room humidity and adjust the humidity according to the wine’s needs There are also two 360° nozzles which enable the user to direct the mist where you want it.

As with most ultrasonic humidifiers, there will be white dust generated from this unit because of the mineral contents in the water. As much possible, it is advised to use distilled or filtered water rather than hard water. That might be a little bit more troublesome for users but if you do not mind cleaning the humidifier slightly more frequently, hard water is fine as well!

Pros

  • Has warm and cool mist for different seasons
  • Able to customize mist temperature to suit one’s needs
  • Quiet during operation
  • Long running time between refills
  • Top fill makes for easy refilling

Cons

  • Not compatible with essential oils
  • Generate white dust during operation

What the fans love: “This humidifiers works excellent for my large master bedroom. It has a large water tank so I do not need to change the water everyday. The part I love most is that it comes with sleeping mode which is really quiet. The design is awesome. It is easy to set up with a phone and to clean inside of the tank. Highly recommend this humidifier. “

Levoit LV600HH Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier

Best Portable Humidifier For Wine Cellar

Product Overview

  • Coverage area: 753 sq. ft. / 70 sq. m.
  • Water tank capacity: 1.5 gallons / 6 litre
  • Essential Oil Compatibility: Yes
  • Running time: 24 – 36 hours
  • Dimensions: 11.3’ x 7’ x 10.5’
  • Weight: 4.92 lbs

The Levoit LV600HH Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier is a dual mist humidifier that can put out both warm and cool mist depending on your settings. Covering an area of 753 sq. fr, this is an extremely powerful humidifier that can work well in a large wine cellar. Powered by ultrasonics, this humidifier does not have a fan and is whisper quiet. It registers a mere 35 dB when it is operating on the highest setting and it is barely discernible.

In terms of functionality, this humidifier comes with an auto mode which does the heavy lifting for you by automatically adjusting the humidity to a comfortable level. However, if you would like to customize the humidity level yourself, you can also pick an exact percentage and adjust it until you find your preferred humidity level. This is perfect for the wine cellar which requires a precise humidity range to age the wine properly.

For homeowners who sometimes forget to do a refill, you will really appreciate the auto shutoff that kicks into place when there is no more water left in the tank.

Regarding the ease of use, I have mixed feelings about the Levoit LV600HH. The remote control is a nice feature which allows homeowners to adjust the settings from across the room.

However, I really have an issue with the water refilling. The water cap is on the base of the water tank. So during a refill, you have to remove the tank, turn it upside down to fill it up and all the while dripping water everywhere and then turn it back again before inserting it back to the humidifier.

As with most ultrasonic humidifiers, it is recommended that you use distilled water or filtered water instead of tap water. Tap water is considered hard water that contains traces of mineral deposits. When used in an ultrasonic humidifier, it releases white dust into the air which may be inhaled by the user. Also, hard water will cause rapid buildup of mineral deposits in the humidifier resulting in more frequent washes. And this is one heater which does require a fair bit of work when washing. There are multiple components which require cleaning and disinfection so each wash can take about 20 minutes if you are thorough.

All in all, a nice sleek humidifier with numerous awesome features which does a great job in humidification. However, it does require a bit more work for maintenance.

Pros

  • Large coverage area
  • Dual mist function
  • Quiet – 35 dB
  • Long running time
  • Auto shutoff function
  • Aroma box for aromatherapy
  • Touchscreen LED display

Cons

  • Requires distilled or filtered water for best results
  • Refilling water is messy
  • Washing is somewhat tedious

What the fans love: “First, I love this humidifier. We have 4 different humidifiers in our home, and this one is by far our favorite. The settings are easily adjustable, no leaks, it’s stable, it’s quiet, no problems. And the customer service is great!”

Dyson AM10 Humidifier

Best Premium Humidifier For Wine Cellar

Product Overview

  • Coverage area: up to 200 sq. ft./ 18.5 sq. m
  • Water tank capacity: 0.8 gallons /4 litre
  • Running time: 12 hours
  • Essential oil compatibility: No
  • Dimensions: 8.7” x 9.4” x 22.8”
  • Weight: 7.5 lb

The Dyson AM10 is a dual function combo unit that can function both as a humidifier and a cooling fan depending on your needs. The humidification runs on ultrasonic technology and is whisper quiet during operation. As testament to its quiet operation, the Dyson AM10 has even achieved the Quiet Mark Certification which is an internationally recognized award for the quietest home appliances.

It comes with a 0.8 gallon water tank that has the ability to humidify an average sized room of  about 200 sq. ft. for up to 12 hours continuously at the highest humidity setting. If  operated at the lowest humidity setting, it can run up to 48 hours between refills. Nonetheless, it will be sufficient for overnight use even at the highest humidity setting.

As with most Dyson products, there is a strong focus on user-friendliness. The Dyson AM10 comes with a remote control that allows you to adjust the humidity level between 30% to 70% in intervals of 10%. If you are unsure what level to set it at, you can also delegate the task to the humidifier itself by choosing the auto mode which will select a humidity level it deems the most comfortable and ideal for your current climate. It is able to achieve this due to the Intelligent Climate Control system which measures both temperature and moisture in the ambient air. We would most likely not be using this mode for our wine cellar as we want it as accurate as possible.

Other functionalities include a sleep timer that can be customized between 15mins and 9 hours for greater flexibility during sleep. The Dyson AM10 also comes with Ultraviolet Cleanse Technology  that is able to kill 99.9% of bacteria in the water by exposing every drop of water to UV light. WIth this, homeowners will have access to clean, healthy , fresh air in their homes. This makes it a great choice for users with asthma and allergies. Say goodbye to nasty sinus congestion and persistent runny nose.

Now, what I do not like about this humidifier is that it is a bottom fill unit so refills are slightly more troublesome. The cleaning of this humidifier does require more work than a usual humidifier because there are quite a number of small parts to disassemble and clean. In order to make your life easier, do consider using distilled or filtered water rather than hard tap water to minimize the amount of scale buildup.

Pros

  • Dual function. Humidifier + Fan
  • Quiet
  • UV light technology which kills 99.9% of bacteria
  • Inbuilt humidistat to control humidity levels
  • Can be remotely controlled
  • Has a sleep timer

Cons

  • Bottom refill
  • Requires more time for maintenance
  • High price point

What their fans love: “My 3 yr old is sensitive to dry air/pet dander and gets very congested so when we put our wood stove in we invested in the dyson humidifier. Within 4 days of use, his congestion completely cleared up. When we have the money, we will be buying another one for the other end of the house. Although expensive, it’s by far worth every penny and more.“

Q: How do I increase the humidity in my wine cellar?

A: The easiest and the most straightforward way is to use a humidifier. However, if you are on a really tight budget, then a bowl or bucket of water may work. The humidity should rise as the water evaporates but reviews with this method have been mixed.

Q: What temperature will ruin wine?

Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 70 deg F would alter the flavor of the wine permanently. Temperatures above 80 deg F would start to cook the wine. Once wine damage has set in, it would taste sour and jammy.

Q: Can you store your wine standing up?

A: No. Your wine should be stored on its side. When stored standing up, the wine is not in contact with the cork and the cork tends to dry out. This results in loss of liquid from the wine and an unfavourable change in taste of the wine.
