This heater is constructed with solid, heavy gauge steel for increased strength and durability and a rust free enamel finish on the exterior to improve the longevity of the heater.

What is unique about this heater is the patented EnergySmart technology which automatically regulates power consumption and the energy usage indicator displays the amount of energy used in operation. Best Quiet Space Heaters Buyers’ Guide

Considerations when choosing Quiet Space heaters

Type of space heaters

Convection

Convection heater works by heating up the air around it via a heating element. The hot air rises and creates a vacuum for cool air to be sucked in and warmed by the heating element. This continued flow creates a circulation of warm air that helps to heat up the room. As such, convection heaters work best in closed spaces. It is worth noting that all convection heaters come with an in-built thermostat for regulation of ambient temperature. In essence, convection heaters work within the framework of “Hot air rises and cold air sinks”.

Fan Forced

Convection heaters may come with a fan that helps to speed up the convection process. These are also commonly known as fan forced heaters and are usually seen with ceramic heaters. These heaters are good at heating a room evenly but it may not be so suitable if you are looking for a quiet space heater. The moving fan blades will definitely make some noise when it is in operation. Depending on the speed of the fan, fan forced heaters can make sounds as high as 60 dB.

Verdict: Avoid fan forced heaters if you need a quiet heater.

Oil Filled Radiators

Some convection heaters make use of natural convection and do not come with a fan. Examples include the oil-filled radiators. These heaters contain oil that is sealed permanently in the heater and it gets heated up by electricity. The heated oil then heats up the exterior of the heater which goes on to heat up the air in contact with the heater.

In my opinion, this is a great choice if you are looking for a quiet heater. Oil filled radiators are virtually silent during operation because there is no fan. It may make a sound when it is turned on and the oil is getting heated up but that is about it.

Because there is no air grille, these heaters are also extremely easy to clean. Just a quick wipe down and you are good to go.

It is a common misconception that this heater is unsafe for children and pets because the exterior gets very hot. However, this is untrue because the exterior actually has a very large surface area which dissipates the heat extremely well. It does get warm but never hot enough to burn anyone. In contrast, it is actually safer than a fan forced heater in which the grate may get very hot to touch.

However, one disadvantage of oil filled radiators is the long time it requires to heat up the room.

Verdict: Consider an oil filled radiator if you want a quiet heater that can heat up a whole room evenly. Do be warned that heating is not immediate and may take 15 to 30 minutes before the whole room is heated up.

If you are looking for an oil filled radiator, check out our guide for the best oil filled radiators.

Radiant Heaters

Radiant heaters work by infrared radiation which travels out in waves to heat up the object in front of it. It does not heat up the surrounding air at all. If you have ever sat in front of a campfire, you have experienced radiant heat. Because radiant heat does not require any medium, it can heat up the object in front of it very rapidly.

In contrast to convection heaters, they are poor at heating up large spaces as their beams tend to be more concentrated on the object ahead and they do not heat up the surrounding air. They are very good at zonal heating and they excel in spaces where people remain still (like the bedroom).

Pure radiant heaters are also great quiet heaters because there is no fan attached. The infrared radiation is emitted from the heating element and warms you up straight away without the need for any fan.

Verdict: Choose infrared heaters if you want a quiet heater for spot heating i.e. you will only be staying in a particular spot. Examples include bedrooms, study rooms.

If you are looking for an infrared heater, check out our guide on the best infrared heater.

Combination Heaters

Combination heaters attempt to combine the features of radiant heaters and convection heaters together to get the best of both worlds. A good example of a combination heater would be the micathermic heaters. These heaters use a heating element known as mica which produces electromagnetic rays. Like infrared rays, these electromagnetic rays produce radiant heat. However, unlike infrared rays which will only heat up the object nearest to it, EM rays can heat up all the objects in an area as the rays are more widespread. As the objects heat up, the air warms up. Since each object in the room is being heated up at the same time, the ambient air warms up quicker.

Micathermic heaters typically do not come with attached fans and are hence also great quiet heaters.

Another type of combination heaters make use of infrared rays to heat up an element and then have a fan to warm the air above the heated element. Therefore, the heater can produce both radiant and convective heat. However, the addition of a fan will increase the noise levels may not be suitable as a quiet space heater.

Lastly, we have combination heaters that come together with humidifiers or air purifiers. These are great all in one units that can serve multiple purposes such as heating up and humidifying a hot yoga room. However, this is not within the scope of this review.

If you are looking for these all in one heaters to save on additional purchasing costs, do check out our guide on the

Verdict: Consider a micathermic heater if you want a quiet heater that can heat up a whole room well.

Noise Level

What is a review on the best quiet heater if we don’t talk about the noise level of these heaters. Sound or noise is typically measured using decibels (dB) and depending on the make of the heater, the noise level can go up to as high as 60 dB.

For an estimate of how 60 dB sounds like, have a look at the infographics below!

Decibel scale for common sounds

The safe limit recommended by experts at the US Environment Protection Agency is 70 dB but that is relevant for workspace only. In our homes, a reasonable limit to aim for would be anything below 40 dB. This is especially so if you are planning to use the heater in your bedroom, study room or a baby nursery. Having a quiet heater in these rooms is crucial for getting good rest and improving concentration.

Size of room

For most buyers who are looking for quiet heaters, they are most likely intending to use the heaters in rooms like the bedroom, study room or baby’s room. These rooms are usually small to medium sized rooms which may not need such a powerful space heater.

Therefore, proper sizing of the space heater’s power in relation to the size of the room does play a part in deciding the best space heater for your needs.

As a general rule of thumb, the ratio to consider is 10 Watts to 1 square foot of space. In theory, a 1500 Watts heater will be sufficient to heat up a room size of about 150 sq feet. When choosing your heater, do have a rough estimate of the room size you are heating up.

If you are heating up a small study room, it would make more sense to choose a personal space heater with lower wattage. By choosing a heater with lower power, you will be able to reduce your electric bills and improve your energy efficiency while still keeping comfortable and warm.

Sizing a space heater accurately can be tough. If math is not your cup of tea, check out our guide on how to size a space heater! Free space heater sizing calculator included!

Certification

When choosing quiet heaters or quiet home appliances in general, having a Quiet Mark Certification is always a clear sign that the appliance has passed stringent testing and assessment to be identified as a quiet product.

Quiet Mark is an independent, international approval award program associated with the UK Noise Abatement Society. It encourages companies worldwide to prioritize noise reduction within the design of everyday machines and appliances. Any quiet product identified and endorsed by Quiet Mark would have undergone scientific testing and assessment. Consumers can rest assured that the product they are getting is probably one of the quietest in a given category.

Best Quiet Heater Product review

Dyson Jet Focus Fan Heater AM09

Best Premium Quiet Space Heater

The Dyson AM09 Fan Heater measures 8” x 6” x 23.4” and weighs 5.9 lb. It has a 1500W wattage and comes with a 2 year limited warranty. This heater is the only one in this review to earn a Quiet Mark certification which is an international approval body for the quietest appliances on the market. The Dyson AM09 is one of two fan heaters to achieve the Quiet Mark Certification. Upon testing, the Dyson AM09 measures about 40 dB at the highest fan setting and goes down to near silence at the lowest fan setting. For a fan-forced heater, this is an engineering feat and this heater definitely belongs in this review of the best quiet heater.

For functionality, this unit is actually both a heater and a cooling fan with the ability to blow out air with temperatures ranging from 32℉ to 99℉ (0°C to 37°C). Because it is a fan forced heater with oscillation properties, this heater will be able to heat up a large sized room quickly and evenly. For homeowners who might not want to run the heater the whole night, there is a sleep timer that runs up to 9 hours. With so many properties and features, Dyson was unable to incorporate all these controls on the heater itself and that is where the remote control comes in. Remote controls are notoriously easy to lose but fortunately Dyson has created a magnetic area at the top so that your remote control will never go missing again!

In terms of safety, Dyson products have the edge because they have no fan blades at all and there is just no danger of getting injured by spinning fan blades. The heating element is also not exposed and it has been engineered to never exceed a maximum of 200°C.

When judging the portability, this heater is light and compact which makes it easy to move around the house. Boasting a sleek tower design, this heater will also fit nicely into any home decor and may even be a talking point when you have guests over.

As you can tell by now, this amazing heater hit all the right notes for a quiet and effective heater. The only limitation is the high price point that comes with all these great functionality. However, if you are looking for quality then this heater is the one for you!

Pros

  • Great safety features with bladeless fan
  • Quiet Mark certification
  • Can be remotely controlled
  • Magnetized storage for remote control
  • Programmable thermostat from 32℉ to 99℉
  • Sleep timer up to 9 hours

Cons

  • High price point

What their fans love: “I do think it is worth the money. It is super light, very easy to assemble, it produces warm air within seconds, and very quiet. I would say it appears to be much safer than a conventional heater. Also can auto-shut off when reaching the target temperature.”

Aikoper Oil filled radiator

Best Quiet Oil Filled Space Heater

The Aikoper oil filled radiator measures 15.4” x 6.4” x 26.1” and weighs 19.81 lbs. It has three different heat settings; 600W, 900W and 1500W to suit your heating needs. For those keen on sustainable living, the heater also comes with an ECO mode for increased energy savings. There is a 1 year warranty that comes with this heater.

As an oil filled radiator without any attached fan, this heater is virtually silent without any spinning fan blades. Like most other oil filled radiators, it makes use of natural convection to heat the room and it can heat up a large room evenly if given about 15 to 30 minutes.

For functionality, this heater has a programmable digital thermostat that allows adjustments between 40-95℉ in 1℉ interval. With such a highly customizable thermostat, this heater can cater to the needs of any homeowners.  Other features include a 24 hours timer that can automatically switch on or switch off the heater. You never have to worry about forgetting to turn off the heater before leaving the room.

In terms of safety, this heater contains the usual tip-over and overheating protection that will automatically turn off the heater when it is knocked down or when it has overheated. For the parents, you will be glad to know that there is a child lock function on this heater that prevents wandering children from meddling with the heater and potentially injuring themselves. Based on this, we would say that this is the best quiet child-friendly space heater.

This heater also comes with caster wheels and remote control, which allows you to control the heater from the comfort of your couch. Although this heater is somewhat heavy at almost 20 lbs, the presence of the caster wheels enables this heater to be mostly portable as long as there are no stairs.  However, it does not come with a carrying handle so homeowners will need to be wary when transporting this heater when it is hot.

Pros

  • Has caster wheels
  • High Medium and Low setting allows for customizable heating
  • ECO mode
  • Great all rounded safety features
  • Has a remote control
  • Highly customizable thermostat
  • Child lock

Cons

  • No carrying handle

What their fans love: “I love the digital thermostat best, which allows me to set a temperature, then it will stop heating if the room temperature arise above the set temperature, and when the room temperature cool below the set temperature, it will re-working automatically , this helps save my energy a lot.”

Costway Oil Filled Radiator

Best Portable Quiet Space Heater

The COSTWAY Oil Filled Radiator Heater measures 5.5” x 12” x 14” and weighs 8.6 lbs. It runs on 700 watts and comes with a 3 years warranty. What sets this apart from the rest of the heater in this review is the portability of this heater. It is meant as a personal heater where you can bring along to different rooms or even to your office. It is extremely lightweight and comes with a built in carrying handle for easy handling. It can be slotted easily under the desk to provide warmth to your legs as required. If you are looking for a quiet portable heater, this is it.

You will definitely appreciate the silent operation of this heater if you are using this in your study room of office. It is virtually silent when it is running. There might be a sound when you just start it up but that is hardly noticeable. All in all, a great silent heater for smaller rooms for work and rest.

In terms of safety, this heater does quite well and comes with overheating protection and tip over protection.

However, because of the smaller size of this heater, the surface area for heat transfer is smaller and the exterior may get hotter than other models while taking a longer time to heat up a room. We would suggest keeping this heater away from your pets and children due to the chance of burn injuries from the exterior.

Nonetheless, I would still recommend this heater if you are looking for a quiet space heater for office use or just a heater that you need to transport around. This is our choice for the best portable quiet space heater.

Pros

  • All rounded safety features
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Space efficient
  • Has ECO mode for energy savings

Cons

  • Not meant for room heating, would do best for personal heating
  • Exterior can get quite hot due to reduced surface area

What their fans love: “I get cold very easily, and so far, this works perfectly for the relatively small room I’m using it in. It definitely makes the room warmer, and I love that it does it without all the noise and blowing air of other heaters.”

De’Longhi MicaThermic Panel Heater 1500 Watt

Best Wall Mounted Quiet Space Heater

The De’Longhi MicaThermic Panel Heater measures 27 x 10 x 22” and weighs 15 lbs. It runs on  1500W power and has a 1 year warranty. As the name suggests, it uses micathermic heating which is a combination of radiation and convection methods to deliver heat. Micathermic heating is extremely efficient. It can heat up a specific zone almost immediately much like an infrared heater but it can also heat up the whole room because of its convective effect.

It is designed as a surface wall mounted heater but you can also attach legs to it to make it a portable heater. However, in a home with pets, we would definitely advise for it to be mounted on the wall. This ensures that it remains out of reach of any curious wandering child or pets.

For safety, this heater comes with the standard tip-over and overheating protection. Although the surface of the heater has a safe grate that makes it safe to touch, we did find that it is still quite unpleasant and hot to touch. Therefore, we do not recommend for it to be used as a portable heater on the floor. If you do intend to use it as a portable heater, they do come with caster wheels but it is somewhat flimsy and tips over easily.

What we love about this heater is that it is virtually silent as there is no fan attached to it at all. It also has an adjustable thermostat and multiple heat settings that allow you to customize this heater to your heating needs.

This is our choice for the best wall-mounted quiet space heater.

Pros

  • Silent operation as there is no fan
  • Can be mounted or portable
  • Inbuilt thermostat has multiple settings to customize heating needs
  • Looks sleek and neat
  • Standard safety features with tip over and overheat protection

Cons

  • Has a tendency to overheat
  • Caster wheels are somewhat flimsy and needs to be treated with care
  • Only 1 year warranty

What their fans love: “Last night the temperature dropped to 39 degrees, I had the unit turned on low and this morning it was still 68 degrees in my house. Which is just a perfect temperature for me. I highly recommend the purchase of this unit!
